Concord grew fast after World War II. Whole neighborhoods went up between the late 1940s and the early 1960s to house workers from the Naval Weapons Station and the industrial corridor along the water — and nearly all of those homes were plumbed with galvanized steel supply pipe, because that was the standard of the day.
Galvanized pipe is steel dipped in a protective zinc coating. It was a reasonable choice. The problem is that the zinc coating wears away from the inside, and once it does, the exposed steel corrodes steadily for the rest of the pipe’s life. Galvanized supply lines were generally expected to last 40 to 50 years.
If your Concord home still has its original plumbing, that pipe is now roughly 70 years old. Here are the six signs that it has reached the end.
1. Water Pressure That Has Faded Over Years
This is the most common complaint and the most frequently misdiagnosed. Homeowners assume the city changed something, or blame the water heater, or install a new showerhead that does not help.
What is actually happening is inside the pipe. As galvanized steel corrodes, rust builds up on the interior wall in rough layers — a process called tuberculation. A pipe with a three-quarter inch interior diameter can constrict to a quarter inch or less of usable opening. The pipe looks fine from the outside. Almost nothing is getting through it.
The giveaway is how the pressure dropped. A sudden change usually points to a specific failure like a valve or a leak. A slow decline over ten or fifteen years, so gradual you adjusted to it without noticing, is corrosion.
Test it yourself: run the kitchen sink, then have someone flush a toilet and start a shower. If the sink slows to a trickle, your pipes cannot deliver enough volume for simultaneous use.
2. Rusty, Brown, or Yellow Water
Discolored water — particularly first thing in the morning, or after the house has sat empty for a weekend — means rust is flaking off the inside of your pipes into the water sitting in them overnight.
Watch for the pattern. If it clears after running for thirty seconds and then returns the next morning, the corrosion is in your home’s pipes, not the municipal supply. If every home on your street sees it at the same time, that is a water main issue and you should contact your water provider.
You may also see it as rust-colored staining in tubs, sinks, and toilet tanks, or on light-colored laundry.
3. Pinhole Leaks That Keep Appearing
Corrosion does not fail everywhere at once. It fails first at the thinnest spot, which produces a small leak in an unremarkable stretch of pipe. That gets repaired. Six months later another one appears somewhere else.
Here is why that pattern matters: every foot of pipe in your house was installed at the same time, from the same material, carrying the same water. When one section corrodes through, the rest is at the same stage. Each repair is a patch on a system that is uniformly at the end of its service life.
Three or more leaks in a year is the practical threshold. At that point you are spending repair money at a rate that will exceed the cost of a repipe, and doing it in unpredictable increments — often behind drywall, in a crawlspace, or above a finished ceiling.
4. Visible Corrosion, Rust Stains, or Flaking at Fittings
Look at whatever exposed pipe you can reach — the crawlspace, the garage, under sinks, near the water heater. Galvanized pipe that is failing shows it: rust-colored stains where fittings meet, white or greenish mineral crust at threaded joints, flaking or bubbling on the pipe surface, and a dull, pitted texture instead of a smooth gray finish.
Threaded connections corrode first because cutting the threads removed the zinc coating at exactly that point. If your fittings look bad, the pipe walls are in similar condition.
5. Metallic Taste or Persistent Odor
Water that tastes like metal or coins is picking up dissolved iron on its way to your tap. It is unpleasant, and it is a signal of active corrosion.
There is a further consideration worth knowing about. Galvanized pipe installed before the 1960s was sometimes coated with zinc containing lead impurities, and homes of that era may also have had lead solder or lead service connections upstream. Corroded galvanized pipe can trap and later release accumulated lead particles. 6. Your Home Is 50 or More Years Old With Original Plumbing
Sometimes there is no dramatic symptom yet. The pipe is simply old, and age alone is a legitimate reason to plan.
Check the pipe itself. Galvanized steel is dull silver-gray, magnetic, and joined by threaded fittings. Copper is reddish-brown and soldered. If a magnet sticks to your water supply lines and you see threaded connections, you have galvanized.
You may also have a partial repipe. It was common for previous owners to replace visible sections in a kitchen or bath remodel while leaving the pipe inside the walls untouched. Shiny copper under a sink does not mean the house was repiped — it usually means one visible run was.
What Whole House Repiping Actually Involves
Homeowners tend to imagine the worst: every wall opened, weeks of disruption, an unlivable house. The reality is more contained.
Whole house repiping replaces all of the water supply lines — hot and cold — from the main shutoff to every fixture. Drain lines are a separate system and are usually not part of the job.
The typical sequence:
- Walkthrough and plan. Mapping every run and identifying the shortest paths, often through the attic or crawlspace rather than through finished walls.
- Permit. Repiping is permitted work in Concord and requires inspection.
- Targeted access. Small openings cut only where they are needed, usually near fixtures and at direction changes.
- New pipe installed. Copper or PEX, run alongside the old system while your water stays on for most of the work.

PEX is flexible, which means fewer fittings and fewer potential leak points, and it can often be routed through existing cavities with far less wall demolition. It resists scale buildup and handles freezing better. It cannot be used outdoors in sunlight and must be protected from UV.

What Happens If You Wait
Failing galvanized pipe does not stabilize. It gets worse, and the failure mode is the expensive part. A pinhole leak inside a wall can run for weeks before anyone notices, and by then the cost is not the plumbing — it is drywall, insulation, flooring, cabinetry, and remediation.
Repiping on your schedule is a planned expense. Repiping after a failure is that same expense plus everything the water ruined.
